In the Wheeltracks of Robert Millar

28 years ago, the great Scottish cyclist, Robert Millar became the first Briton ever to achieve a final podium finish in the Tour de France.

For three glorious weeks, those of us who could access TV pictures, radio commentary or simply press coverage were inspired by Millar’s phenomenal prowess as he danced his way up climb after climb to secure the King of the Mountains red and white polka dot jersey.

Millar won one stage in that 1984 Tour – a summit finish at the Pyrenean ski station of Guzet Neige. This added to his 1983 triumph on a monster stage, finishing at the Pyrenean spa town of Luchon. And he returned to the stage winner’s podium a third time in his career – summiting first at Superbagneres (another Pyrenees ski station) in the 1989 Tour.

Notice a pattern? The Pyrenees were Millar’s most successful hunting ground. And in tribute to his King of the Mountains victory and those three great stage wins, PyrActif are delighted to bring you this very special riding package.

Nine great cols / climbs featured in Millar’s three stage victories (he climbed 12, but three featured twice). Over three or four days riding, our support vehicles will accompany you up and over each of those 9 cols / climbs. Finishing Day 3 or 4 at the summit of Guzet Neige, you will have climbed every metre of the major climbs on ‘Millar’s Stages’ and will be able to reflect in some modest way on what it is to have walked a mile in the shoes of one British cycling’s true greats.
