Tour de Lance In many ways, the career of Lance Armstrong has been defined by his performances in the Pyrenees. He finished seven minutes down at the summit of Hautacam and 20 minutes adrift at the finish in Luz Ardiden during his first Tour in 1994. The tragedy of team-mate Fabio Casartelli’s fatal crash on the Portet d’Aspet is etched in the memory of1995. Then the glory of the great climbs of 1999-2005 – the wins at Luz, Plateau de Beille, La Mongie and Pla d’Adet. Perhaps even more memorably, the destruction of Pantani and the rest on Hautacam in 2000 (click here to link to YouTube footage of that stage). And there’s the Plateau de Bonascre, probably one of only two places on the Tour where the ‘99-’05 Lance ever showed signs of cracking. Who knows what the 2010 Tour may bring?
